When you walk in, you’re greeted with a bombastic environment and  people running around, monitor to monitor just to catch the next game. You’ll hear cheering and applause from those rooting for their friends — and chaos from all participants in Super Smash Club.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a Nintendo party fighting game made for the Nintendo Switch, and the club at RHS was started by junior DJ Singleton in February after he participated in a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament.

“I actually got the idea way back from a Kessler Center event,” Singleton said. “Me and my friend Quincy Graham went to Kessler Center for a Smash tournament, a school-based one, and we got the idea from someone that works at Puyallup High School for it. He brought up the idea originally of starting an E-sports team, getting like a professional team, but that wouldn’t have worked. So, we settled for a club and it just kind of blossomed from there.”

Super Smash club consists of roughly 20 people all cheering each other on and bantering back and forth. They invite all types of people to try the club, experienced in the game or not.

“I like how it’s very inclusive and how loud it is and, it’s just overall fun. It’s always entertaining,” Diego G. Peña said.

With the multiple games going, flashing colors, and raging music, it’s quite easy to get lost in all the action. The club makes an hour feel like a minute and makes you wish for more time.

“I would recommend it if you like playing well, Super Smash Bros. It’s a fun experience overall because you get to meet a bunch of new people and. It’s something different, every time they come in,” Hector Nunez said.

As of now the club doesn’t plan on doing anything too big, mainly just enlarging the club and gaining more interest from people of Rogers but maybe if people are interested that might change.

‘’We don’t really have future plans right now,” Singleton said ” I think if anything the one thing that I wanted to try and do is possibly get into the E-sport scene, but I don’t think our members are super competitive, which is perfectly okay but not something that we can really go for…so, we can’t go down the E-sports path. So just going to probably stick to this kind of club, get it bigger. Stuff like that.”

The club is held on Thursdays in room C-222 from 2:50 to 3:50 and advised by English teacher Jeff Nusser. He believes the club is a great space for socializing, fun, and also entertainment. He’s more than willing to keep the club running into next school year.

“If they’re having a club yeah. I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t…I just love watching ’em have fun.” to me it’s everything that a club really should be at a high school,” Nusser said. “I think the idea of having so many different clubs is that you try to offer things that will appeal to a wide range of students. So, this club obviously has its own little niche… It’s a bunch of kids that come together, they drink soda, they eat chips or whatever kind of candy, and play games and they have tons of fun. They connect, they socialize it. It really is everything we want a club to be. So, anything I can do to be a part of making that happen, I’m totally happy to do.”

Super Smash Club isn’t just a gaming club, it’s a space where people can socialize and make new friends and if you’re interested you have the rest of the year and possibly the next to try it out.
