Welcome to the series where video games are loved and explained. In this series we will go through games that your fellow students love, how to play them, what they are about, and how we can relate them to real life instances. To begin this series, we will be talking about Skyrim: The Elder Scrolls 5 — a game that has been out for quite a while, but still is a favorite of many gamers. Staff member Jonathon Cobb helped with the research.
The goal of the game is to defeat a dragon and prevent said dragon from destroying the world. You can go wherever you wish in the game at any time. This game is the definition of being an open world for players to explore as they wish while they complete a series of challenges. Before any of the challenges, you’re allowed to change your gender and your race, you have 10 different options of races, such as humans, elves, orcs, etc. You have the opportunity to gain 18 different skills, and after leveling up your skills enough you can level up your character itself. Like any other creature in the game, dragons spawn randomly and could engage in battle with anyone. You must be sure to help them when you are capable.
Throughout the game you might decide that the best route is to befriend the non-player characters (NPCs) of the world; some can help you in battle when needed. In this game you are given the ability to cut characters from the game, however you must be careful of whom you cut from the world because they might be part of a quest, which would make it impossible for you to obtain the goal later. If you do end up killing an NPC, make sure to check them for valuables or loot. Also, be sure to check abandoned buildings for resources — leave nothing uninspected.
When you enter the gaming process, you will notice that dragons are once again back. That is right, back. Before you can solve any issue, you must figure out what it is to begin with. This game can help you with your hand-eye coordination, multi-tasking, problem solving abilities, and even money management.
“Take your time, learn the game, learn the techniques, explore the different options, think of ways to come to different solutions,” Cobb said
You can play this game on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and even PC. While it is a semi-old game, you won’t regret playing this hidden gem. It does cost a little bit of money, but you can find it is at GameStop for $20. It is highly recommended by players.
