The game awards honor the games released through out the current year and are streamed live on twitch and ran as a in person show.

The Game Awards is an event held in Los Angeles every year to celebrate and award video games and the talent working on them. The Game Awards is hosted by Geoff Keighley and has been going on since 2014.

This year The Game Awards takes place today at 4:30 p.m. PST in a Microsoft theater while they run a Twitch stream for online audiences.

When it comes down to categories, almost everything is covered from game of the year to best multiplayer game to best mobile game. Even stuff like beat esports manager and esports team is voted on.

Game of the year is as simple as it sounds. It’s given to a nominated game with the most votes as the best overall game of the year. This means it’s good at everything it does. It’s a fun, enjoyable story/campaign, with beautiful graphics, music, and more. This year that award could go to, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, or Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Another big category is Best Mobile Game. This only is allowed for mobile games of course. This category is more relevant due to how mobile gaming has become more common for many as it’s easy and most of the population owns a phone. This award could go to Apex legends Mobile, Diablo Immortal, Genshin Impact, Marvel Snap, or Tower of Fantasy.

Best multiplayer is good for many as it shows people what games are good to play with friends or family. This could be for online or in-person multiplayer. The nominees this year are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Multiversus, Overwatch 2, Splatoon 3, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s revenge.

Each year, as games are released, some get nominated by players to compete for awards, while others are nominated and voted on by players. Meaning some categories have multiple versions. Game of the year has a normal and players’ choice award. Other categories have this as well.

These player choice awards start as a poll ran by the game awards days before the event. As time moves on, they run 2 more rounds of the polls until the winner is decided and announced at the game awards live. These polls tend to be very heated as many try and mass vote for a singular game they enjoy and wish to see win an award of high honor such as Game of the Year.

The show also includes music performances, guest appearances, new game previews, and influencers who are a part of the gaming world. An example is back in 2019, Keanu Reeves showed up to talk about Cyberpunk 2077.

The Game Awards started as just a simple showcase for video games back in 2014, but as time progressed and video games became mainstream media, it has become common for celebrities to be a part of the game world, being in video games or announcing the awards for a game. Either way, The Game Awards has become a fun show that fans of games can enjoy and can introduce newcomers to video games to play as the show is about great games and new titles.
