What Happened to the Forests?

Deforestation is the demolition of forests to use its resources, which is mostly wood, and to use the cleared out land for planting crops or building houses.

Forests are important to us because they convert carbon dioxide to oxygen to make our air fresh and breathable. “They play a critical role in managing clouds, wind, humidity, air quality, and rainfall patterns”. (conservation.org)

According to conservation.org, forests also create climate stability. “Carbon dioxide and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere trap the sun’s heat. Too little carbon dioxide, or too much of it, and the planet cannot support life. Forests help make sure the amount of Co2 is just right.”

The demolition of forests slows down the process of converting carbon dioxide to oxygen, which increases global warming.

Global warming affects animals’ climates as well.

“Scientists working in Antarctica have discovered an alarming rise in sea temperature that threatens to disrupt populations of penguins, whales, seals and a host of smaller creatures within a few decades”. (theguardian.com)

The climate in Antarctica has been increasing in average temperature each year because of climate change. But there are many ways that you can help save the planet.

You can start helping the environment by getting involved with community service. Some organizations will go around and pick up litter around cities, forests or high ways. Other organizations will plant trees or flowers.

To plant flowers and trees, you don’t necessarily need to be involved with community service. Most grocery stores or hardware stores have “nurseries” which is where all of the plants, pots, and soil is kept. You can purchase all of these and plant them around your property!

Conserving energy is another great form of helping the environment. Turning off the lights of rooms you aren’t using is one way along with turning off the water while brushing your teeth.

Recycling and reusing items is a huge form of helping the environment. You can reuse milk jugs but cutting them in half and using them as pots to plant flowers in your yard.

When recycling you should also make sure you are recycling the right items so you don’t accidently put recyclable items in the trash.

Making sure you recycle, conserve energy, and involve yourself in community service will ultimately help save and preserve our planet and the life that it holds.
